Breaking Barriers at Doncaster Sheffield Airport
In the final week of May, an extraordinary partnership took flight at Doncaster Sheffield Airport as Aerobility joined forces with a number of dedicated organisations to bring the joy and magic of accessible aviation to the local disabled community. Over the course of four inspiring days, disabled people from across the region were given the opportunity to experience aviation in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment, many for the very first time.
The initiative was made possible thanks to the collective efforts of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, The Mark Long Trust, 2Excel, and Vulcan to the Sky Trust, whose combined support helped create unforgettable moments for participants and their families alike. For many attendees, the experience represented far more than simply taking to the skies. It was about breaking barriers, building confidence and proving that aviation can be accessible to everyone.
Dominic, one of the participants, shared the impact the experience had on him: “I thought flying in a light aircraft would be impossible due to my muscle wasting condition, but with Aerobility’s help it was made into a reality. Thank you to everyone for making this day so memorable, a lot of disabled people will remember this experience for a long time.”
Stories like Dominic’s were echoed throughout the week, with participants describing feelings of excitement, achievement and empowerment after their flights. Aerobility has long championed the belief that disability should never be a barrier to aviation, a mission amplified by the amazing Mark Long Trust who donated volunteer time and finances to support this initiative. Participants and their families were also treated to a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour and introduction to historic bomber aircraft Vulcan XH558 thanks to Vulcan to the Sky Trust and its dedicated volunteers.
The event also highlighted the importance of growing commitment within the aviation sector to improve accessibility and inclusion, demonstrating what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose. Simon Hinchley, Executive Director of Airport operations, added: “The success of the past week has been down to a true team effort, between staff here at the airport, three charities and collaboration with our existing tenants. It has been great to see the runway busy with flight movements as we build towards reopening to freight, passenger and general aviation traffic. It has been another very active week at the airport, and we look forward to building on this partnership in the future.”
From volunteers and pilots to support staff and sponsors, every individual involved played a vital role in ensuring the event’s success. Their dedication helped create an atmosphere of encouragement, excitement and possibility for all that will last well beyond these inspirational four days.
